im an incoming freshman this year..

okay, well i just got a letter from Smith admissions office that  said due to my decline in grades on my final transcript in high school, i must take steps to regain my academic momentum, and that when i arrive on campu, i must schedule an appointment with Tom Riddell, Dean of the First-Year Class.

If anyone has been in this situation, can anyone please tell me what this means and what will happen to me? will i be barred from taking certain classes, extracurriculars, etc? And what exactly is going to happen at and after this appointment with the dean?

Thanks so much.

Hello ladies!

I know I've posted on here before, but this time, it's pretty set that I'm going to transfer.

I'm a sophomore at RMWC, which has just went co-ed. I'm planning on transferring for spring semester, and my dream school is and always will be the beautiful Smith College. I visited when I was a prospective back in H.S., but I was waitlisted, and sadly, went to a school that is now going to be admitting men. :(

I would normally ask all of the "prospective" questions, but I'm not going to annoy you with them... I've researched Smith well enough that I know much about the college. So, here's my question ...

I had a 2.4 gpa last year, because of a certain class I failed. (And in general, adjusting to college life and academics.) I had a lot of problems last year, as well as I took on some things I couldn't handle. I know that's not going to look good at all on an application, but my essay is going to be fabulous (about how this summer at an all-girls camp changed my life), and I will interview. I will also get great recommendations. Now, I am working hard this year (very hard... I do all my assignments and readings ahead of time :) which is a change), so my gpa will increase. However, if I transfer for spring, my gpa won't be there on the app for admissions. I want and need (and yes, I feel that it is crucial) for me to go to a woman's college. It has changed my life, and a woman's education is sooooooo incredible. I don't want to go to a school that is now "coed" even if only 10 men are admitted. And, I want to go to Smith. I've been emailing my admissions counselor for the past semester (so I'm staying very interested).

A little as of why I have to transfer in the spring:

1. a lot of Randy-Mac credits don't transfer, so I would be wasting 17,000 or so.

2. I want to get into a study abroad program... for my junior/senior year (I don't know when), so I think I would need to get to Smith soon to apply to go abroad.

3. This place is ultra depressing and emotional - and it's so hard to cope here.

4. I want to be closer to home (NY)!

If you have any suggestions, advice, or anything you could share, I would VERY much appreciate it. :) Thanks!

Thank you for all your input in advance. :)

Danielle

Hey All!

Well, I am transferring into Smith this fall to the '09 class. Transferring has its downside--but if you guys can catch me up on whats the best housing, clubs, classes, etc. That would be great!

Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall.

Cheers, Elle

Smith's high and low points [12 Apr 2006|02:42pm]

Hello again, everyone! To the people who have been answering me on my last query about feminism and activism at Smith as compared to Mount Holyoke, I thank you very much. I have some more questions for you.

If you were deciding between Smith and MHC (or even other women's colleges), what was it that made you pick Smith over the others?

How feasible is it to double-major in government and philosophy, and is this strange reduction of classes I'm hearing about on the Jolt only a temporary thing?

What are the top 5 greatest things about Smith?

What are the top 5 worst things about Smith?

...If I transferred from MHC, do you think, based on what knowledge you may have of the two campuses, that the "college experience" would be significantly different in terms of politics, amount of partying, types of people, et cetera?

I never applied to Smith for whatever odd reason and now... well, it's intriguing to me. Again, thank you.

Smith, activism, feminism... MHC [10 Apr 2006|06:08pm]

[ mood | discontent ]

Hello. I attend Mount Holyoke and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions.

How much of a voice does FSU have on campus? I ask because I've been experiencing tendencies from Mount Holyoke students to distance themselves from concepts of feminism and I feel like I have to monitor what I say around people or they'll trivialize what I'm saying as "too PC" (and therefore unreasonable).
More than a couple of times I've had people react to my involvement in Feminist Collective by asking, "Oh, but... you're not *really* into it, right? Like really serious?" This led me to start questioning the differences between the campuses of Mount Holyoke and Smith, especially when I heard that Smith is more "intense" and "politicized". Would you agree that the campus is, for the most part, politically engaged and aware and that students aren't afraid to be "PC" and stand up for feminism?

I think my questions around these issues came to a head first when I attended Guerrilla Girls and was amazed to see how packed the auditorium was and how enthusiastic everyone was; it made me wonder if such an event would elicit such an affirming response from the population at my own school. Secondly, there was
an event here last Saturday called the Festival of Diversity which featured a few incredibly inappropriate acts. Namely there was a well-known and well-liked conservative professor who came on in the middle and started making trivializing, patronizing, and condescending remarks about political correctness, including something about how he wanted to read "White Man's Burden" but that he wouldn't so as not to "offend anyone", and then he went on to give a pointless re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood that was "PC" and included details such as Little Red Riding Hood calling the wolf "sexist". What disturbed me even more was that people were laughing and saying how great it was. There was also a Latina dance called "Four Chicks and Me" featuring one student dressed up as a male with a shirt that said "LATIN PIMP" as the "chicks" writhed around as if playing the part of "his" women. Many students do not seem to be upset about either of these events.

I'd just really like to see your reactions to all of this and I'd like to know how you think the Smith campus would react to these sorts of goings-on. I'll be posting similar questions to the Smith blog communities et al, so forgive me if you see this same post other places you may post. I thank you for any insight or remarks you may be able to provide me with, be it the level of
enthusiasm about feminism on campus or whatever else comes to mind.

This is being cross-posted to the Smith Daily Jolt as well as smithies and smithiesqa, so forgive me if you see a duplicate. Thanks again.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone would like to host for me for an overnight when I visit Smith. The overnight would be on the night of April 12th, and I would visit the college during the day on April 13th.

I know this is a bit of an odd request as…I don’t know any of you. But, I am really interested in getting the real feel of Smith and what better way to actually hang out w/ a student?

I am very relaxed and would be up for mostly anything. I would bring my own sleeping bag and pillow, pay for all my own stuff (like dinner or whatever) and…be eternally grateful! The college does sometimes arrange overnights, but as a junior, this isn’t an option for me. I won’t be able to visit again until I am accepted and officially walk through the doors as a freshman, so really wanted to do this now.

To let you get a better idea of who I am (as my LJ doesn’t say much): I am looking for a liberal arts education and really want a college experience that includes great professors, small classes, open-mindedness, and a push for students to take action in their education and world. Some favorite TV shows include: Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Prison Break (mmm…sexy guys), and Desperate Housewives. I am involved with GSA and Drama at school, and want to have a bunch of fun!

Other than that, I’m not much of a partier and would probably have to stay with someone female, as my mom is coming with me.

If not an overnight…perhaps grabbing lunch that day? Or maybe I could just come and talk to you? Coffee on campus or at a nearby café?

I’d really appreciate anything.

Audrey

p.s. Also, so this isn’t really creepy, I can provide a picture so you kind of just get a sense of who I am. Oh! And if there any questions, please email: smartypiebrown@hotmail.com

Hey all,
I'm currently a freshman at a state school and am looking to transfer to Smith in the Fall... so I have a few questions:

*What do they look for in a prospective student? (Grades, volunteer work, extra curriculurs etc....)

*What kind of questions do they ask at the interview?

*Do they accept extra letters of reccomendation?

*Are the financial aid packages as good as they claim?

*What else can I do to up my chances of being admitted?

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays :)

2009! [14 Dec 2005|02:26am]

[ mood | curious ]

So Smithies09, we've been here pretty much a whole semester (which is crazy). Do you all like Smith?

Out of curiousity (and procrastination as it's 2 am but I'm not actually tired yet) what is different about Smith than you thought it would be? What's exactly how you pictured it?

Any great theories about life in light of Smith?

My ramblings...Collapse )

But yes, with all the people in the smithies10 community beginning to be admitted and all, I wanted to see what everyone who flipped out over acceptance letters in here with me was up to. I'm beginning to feel kind of old (or I'm just denying all the work I have to do...shhhh). In any case, good luck with all your finals!

:-)

Hey Ladies!

I applied to Smith for the class of '09, but got waitlisted. I found the college I'm at now, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and I really like it. However, I still have thoughts about going to Smith. I would really like to experience Smith; I mean, it was my dream school! Anyway, here's my question. I don't know whether I want want to transfer, but I was thinking about doing a junior year exchange program at Smith. I don't know if this is possible, I really haven't talked to anyone yet. Is there such a program? If so, what are some things I should work on over the next two years?

I'm really comtemplating transferring. I'm so confused though. Do you have any advice? If I did decide to transfer, what grades/extra curriculars should I have? Does Smith look at anything specific?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me!

-Danielle

Celebration of Sisterhood needs help! [04 Oct 2005|07:55pm]

sheana
[ mood | busy ]

It's been posted about before, but I'm afraid I don't remember what the context was. So!

Are you queer? Do you just love the queers? Want to be involved in Smith's biggest celebration of queerness all year? Celebration of Sisterhood WANTS YOU!

Celebration is basically Smith's version of a gay pride, held in mid-November in the quad. There are skits, performances by a cappella groups and various orgs like spectrum and prism, as well as tabling all down the "parade" route and a fabulous dance at the end. However, in order for Celebration to be a success, we need folks to be on the steering committee!

Want to help? Want Celebration NOT to end? Then come meet with us Wednesday, 10/5 at 7:30 PM in the lower level of the campus center. You can find out about the plight of celebration, dates and plans for the year, and how to get involved.

Comments or questions? Email sheana at sdirecto@smith.edu for more info. :)

I'm helping out a stranger here...

This guy named Jonathan Tucker, who goes to Amherst and is a friend of a friend at Amherst, is looking for "a girl who goes to Smith who came to Amherst tonight [Saturday, the 24th] for a party at Newport house where the fire alarm went off. She knows a lot about astronomy and I think she's kind of short and I think has light hair. This is all I know about her. Any help you are able to provide is greatly appreciated."

He also says she may have reddish hair.

Anyone matching that description? He's on facebook, so maybe this person can contact him directly through facebook. Good luck (well I guess mainly to him...)!

CAMPAIGNING RULES, YO :D [24 Sep 2005|02:11pm]

theartistcobby
Hey Everybody! We're at Smith! ;) Kind of a little late to be saying that, but yes, here we are. And I've met ALOT of you, though there are still some people I've got to find. ;)

So, here's the purpose of my post. Student elections for the Class of 2009 are coming up, as the dates for candidates signing up just passed. Campaigning can't being until this Tuesday at 9am. I know some members of this community might be running/are running so here are the ground rules for using this community if you DO plan to run/advertise on here, my lovelies:

1.) Please, state your name/position running for. It will clarify things. ;)

2.) If you plan on writing alot of stuff/making a long entry, do an lj-cut. Look it up in livejournal's FAQ if you have any issues, or pester me. It saves sanity on friend's lists and people will be very grateful.

3.)Basically you can tell us whatever you want. Just no slandering other people/their campaigns...though I doubt that'd ever be an issue, because we're mature and whatnot. Right? Right. ;)

4.) If people have questions about your campaign/how you feel about things or whatnot, they can post the questions to your entry. Which brings me to another point...

5.) ANONYMOUS COMMENTS HAVE BEEN DISABLED. Hopefully this will dispel some issues we've had a few times. :)

If there are anymore concerns about this whole community campaigning thing, post your questions/ideas on this entry and I'll add 'em. Just wanted to get some basic stuff out there though. Thanks to Rachel A. for bringing it up. ;)

Class of 09 rocks. LOVE YOU ALL!

-Cobby
